IPL 2020: Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Kings XI Punjab, Talking Points

Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated Kings XI Punjab by 69 runs in Dubai today. Five losses out of six matches- there’s hardly any hope left for Kings XI Punjab and KL Rahul, the new skipper.

Hyderabad openers
160-run partnership for the first wicket set the base for a mammoth total set by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Kings XI Punjab. David Warner-led team decided to choose bat first after winning the toss and the skipper along with his partner for the opening stand justified the call. David Warner and Jonny Bairstow left no space for the Hyderabad bowlers and blasted in the middle.

However, Bairstow was more dominating and devasting as Warner tried to play the role of the anchor by keeping it a bit low. Warner scored 52 runs off 40 balls whereas his partner added a 55-ball 97 with seven fours and six sixes. In 15 overs, they stitched 160 runs together and made sure Sunrisers Hyderabad go beyond 200 easily. They were unstoppable and made the innings miserable with every ball for Kings XI Punjab.

Bishnoi leads the way
With no sign of an initial breakthrough for Kings XI Punjab, Ravi Bishnoi, the young leg-spinner from Kings XI Punjab gave the ultimate blow in the 16th over. He removed both Warner and Bairstow in space of three balls to finally provide some ray of hope for his side. Warner went for a slog sweep and was comfortably pouched by Glenn Maxwell.

Almost in no time, Bairstow was given LBW off the 4th ball of the same over. Bishnoi’s third scalp was Abdul Samad and his spell of three wickets ensured the SRH could not reach 230. Another young KXIP bowler who made his mark today was Arshdeep Singh. Playing his first match of the tournament Arshdeep Singh bowled intelligently and used his variations including slower balls and a good yorker to finish with 2/33 in his four overs.

SRH bowling show
KXIP chase never took off and did not get the required momentum. The opening partnership was broken just in the second over when David Warner’s brilliant piece of fielding ensured Mayank Agarwal was runout. KL Rahul was not in his usual self and ended up scoring just 11 off 16 balls. In Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s absence, the three young pacers of SRH raised their hand and bowled with much more purpose than their KXIP counterparts. Sandeep Sharma kept things tight and finished with none for 27 in his four overs. T Natarajan continued to impress with his yorkers and Khaleel Ahmed also bowled tightly as the duo finished with identical figures of 2/24.

However, Rashid Khan was the star for them. The Afghanistan leg spinner looked in impressive touch and finished with three key wickets conceding just 12 runs in his 4 overs.

Pooran’s maiden IPL 50
After a slow start to the tournament, Nicholas Pooran now looks like the only middle-order batsman for Kings XI Punjab in good nick. Even today, KXIP had their entire hope on Pooran after the early dismissal of the openers and another failure from Glenn Maxwell. The West Indian southpaw batted aggressively and counterattacked the SRH bowlers to reach his maiden IPL half-century off just 17 balls- the fastest 50 of IPL 2020.

Eventually, he was dismissed by Rashid Khan after scoring 77 off 37 deliveries with five fours and seven sixes. With Pooran confirming his position in the XI, the KXIP management may opt to replace Maxwell with Chris Gayle in their next match against Kolkata Knight Riders.
