After making his ODI debut in 1999, the big West Indian opener has a career spanning two decades and has now completed 300 ODI caps. With the World Cup done and dusted, Gayle resumed his ODI career for the Windies, and completed his 300th ODI in the second match of the series against India at Trinidad. Here we take a glance at his ODI career.

Most Caps for West Indies

Gayle went past Brian Lara as West Indies’ most capped ODI player with 300 ODIs. Among West Indian players, Lara, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Desmond Haynes and Carl Hooper have been among the most capped players. Now Gayle has gone past Lara in ODIs with 300 caps and at 39 years, is still going strong. He is the first West Indian player to go past 300 caps in the format.

Most hundreds in ODIs

With 25 hundreds in the format, Gayle has the most tons in the format for West Indies. He has as many hundreds as Kumar Sangakkara and AB de Villiers in ODIs. The belligerent opening batsman has an average of 37.71 with 25 tons and 53 half-centuries. He is the joint seventh most century maker in ODIs.

Most runs in ODIs for West Indies

After a 20-year long career, Gayle has the most runs for West Indies in ODIs. He is one among the only two batsmen to make 10,000 or more runs in fifty-overs cricket for West Indies. He is the 12th highest run-getter overall in ODIs but has been a remarkable player for the Caribbean Islands.

Most sixes in ODIs

Gayle stormed into ODI cricket as a big hitting opener and his brutal power has remained consistent over the 20 years. His 10,353 runs in ODIs have come at a strike rate in the mid-80s and much of his game has revolved around boundary hitting. He is one of only two players with 300 or more sixes in ODIs. With 326 sixes in the format, Gayle is only behind Shahid Afridi for most sixes in the format.
