Bangladesh began Day 2 of the second Test match against Sri Lanka, in Mirpur, on 277/5. They owed their position almost entirely to the efforts of Liton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim, who had come together when the innings was in crisis at 24/5 and added an unbroken 233 on Day 1. Das finished the day on 135 and Rahim on 115.
The pair added 19 to the overnight score before Sri Lanka finally broke through. Kasun Rajitha had Das caught by Kusal Mendis for 141. He had faced 246 balls and hit a six and 16 fours. Three balls later, Rajitha had Mosaddek Hossain caught behind for a duck.
Mushfiqur and Taijul Islam put on 49 for the eighth wicket before Asitha Fernando had Taijul caught behind for 15. In his next over, Asitha dismissed Khaled Ahmed, also caught behind without scoring. Mushfiqur had taken his own score to 175, including 21 fours, but he ran out of partners when Ebadot Hossain was run out without troubling the scorers.
Bangladesh were eventually 365 all out, a substantial recovery given that they had been 24/5 at one stage on the first morning. Rajitha took 5-64 and Asitha 4-93.
Sri Lanka made a positive start to their reply, with an opening partnership between Oshada Fernando and his captain Dimuth Karunaratne. They ate into the Bangladesh lead with a stand of 95 before Oshada fell for 57, caught by Najmul Hossain Shanto off Ebadot. He had made 57, and his innings included a six and 8 fours.
Karunaratne and Mendis put on 45, but just before close of play Mendis was leg before to Shakib Al Hasan for 11. Nightwatch Rajitha saw out the rest of the day although he has yet to score. At the other end, Karunaratne will resume on 70 not out. Sri Lanka still trail by 222 runs.
