A dramatic final day collapse by Bangladesh enabled Sri Lanka to complete a crushing 10-wicket victory in Mirpur. With that, they also won the two-match Test series 1-0.
Bangladesh began the final day of the second Test fighting to save the match. Trailing Sri Lanka by 141 runs on first innings, they had reached 34/4 by stumps on Thursday, still trailing by 107 runs, At the crease were Mushfiqur Rahim, on 14, and Liton Das, with just a single to his name.
The same pair who had got Bangladesh out of a similar predicament in the first innings, but on Friday morning, they added a mere 19 before Kasun Rajitha bowled Rahim for 23.
However, Das proved yet again to be a thorn in Sri Lanka side. He and Shakib Al Hasan joined forces, adding 103 before Das was caught and bowled by Asitha Fernando for 52. Four overs later, Asitha struck again, removing Shakib caught behind for 58, having struck seven fours. That signalled a sudden and dramatic collapse as the last three wickets fell in the space of nine balls.
Ramesh Mendis had Mosaddek Hossain leg before for nine. Then Asitha claimed his fifth wicket when he had Taijul Islam leg before, and he wrapped up the innings next ball when he bowled Khaled Ahmed for a golden duck. He took 6-51 as Bangladesh were all out for 169.
That left Sri Lanka needing just 29 to win the match. Oshada Fernando (21*) and Dimuth Karunaratne (7*) duly knocked out the required runs with no alarms.
Bangladesh 365 (Mushfiqur Rahim 175*, Liton Das 141; Kasun Rajitha 5-64, Asitha Fernando 4-93) and 169 (Shakib Al Hasan 58; Asitha Fernando 6-51) lost to Sri Lanka 506 (Angelo Mathews 145*, Dinesh Chandimal 124; Shakib Al-Hasan 5-96) and 29/0 (Oshada Fernando 21*) by 10 wickets.
