Jasprit Bumrah, the star bowler of India cricket team received the Polly Umrigar Award for terrific international performance in the 2018-19 season. Poonam Yadav, on the other hand, bagged the top prize in the women’s category.
Bumrah’s prolific form has made him irreplaceable in the Indian team. Since his Test debut in January 2018, the 26-year-old has picked up 62 wickets from 12 Tests at an average of 19.24. The world’s number one ODI bowler, Jasprit Bumrah recorded five-wicket hauls in South Africa, England, Australia, and West Indies to become the first Asian bowler to achieve such feat.
For Poonam Yadav, this is another feather in her cap after the prestigious Arjuna Award from the Government of India. She had a stupendous year where she claimed 14 wickets in eight ODIs and 20 wickets in 15 T20Is.
Bumrah also received the Dilip Sardesai Award 2018-19 for taking the maximum wickets in Test cricket whereas Cheteshwar Pujara received the same for being the highest run-getter. In women’s category, Smriti Mandhana bagged the awards for the highest run-getter in ODIs as Jhulan Goswami was honoured for claiming the highest wickets in ODI in the 2018-19 season.
The former India captains, Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Anjum Chopra were presented with CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award and the BCCI Lifetime Achievement Award for Women respectively for their contribution to Indian cricket. Apart from being a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, Srikkanth also captained India and served Indian cricket as the chief selector after his retirement. Anjum represented India in four ODI World Cups and two T20 World Cup.
Mayank Agarwal, thanks to his brilliant debut series in Australia in 2018-19, received the best international debut in men’s category as the 15-year-old Shafali Verma got the equivalent one in the women’s category.
