Pakistan returned to play India, having hosted their neighbours earlier in 2004, for a solitary ODI to commemorate 75 years of the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) which took place at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

India won the toss and decided to bat. Virender Sehwag hit two sixes in his 53, making a fifty. Although Sachin Tendulkar was out for just 16, much to the disappointment of the crowd, V.V.S. Laxman (43) and captain Sourav Ganguly (48) kept the scoreboard moving along.

Then Yuvraj Singh gave the innings some late impetus, scoring 78 off 62 balls, including two sixes and 10 fours. He was out off the penultimate ball of the innings, attempting one big hit too many. India set a competitive score of 292/6. Shahid Afridi was the most successful Pakistan bowler, finishing with 2-29 from 10 overs.

Although India got Younis Khan for a duck, fellow opener Salman Butt added 113 for the second wicket with Shoaib Malik. Malik was the first of the pair to depart, for 61 with two sixes, but Butt added 27 more with Mohammad Yousuf (18). It was then the turn of Butt and his captain Inzamam-ul-Haq to combine in a partnership of 98.

Inzamam eventually fell off the second ball of the penultimate over for 75, with a  six and eight fours against his name. Butt, in the company of Abdul Razzaq, guided Pakistan home, with an over to spare. Butt remained not out on 108, from 130 balls with 13 fours, and was named Man of the Match as Pakistan won by six wickets.
