Prior to the World Cup in 2018, Australia's men's cricket coach, Andrew McDonald, expressed satisfaction with the team's development and depth in One-Day Internationals (ODIs).

Australia defeated New Zealand and Zimbabwe in back-to-back one-day international series wins despite the side going through changes as captain Aaron Finch announced his retirement.

Finding a successor for Finch as the white-ball skipper and opener is the current challenge confronting Australia.

Before making a conclusion, McDonald said they will try a few more things after finding some answers to these issues.

While adjusting their batting and bowling lineups, Australia defeated Zimbabwe 2-1 in Townsville and destroyed New Zealand 3-0 in Cairns.

Despite Mitch Marsh, Marcus Stoinis, and Pat Cummins not being included in that last side, McDonald noted that by exposing some guys like Inglis, Abbott, and Green, "we're just developing some depth."

"We have performed a few players in various roles.

The local media cited McDonald as stating, "We have challenged ourselves with the structure of our team, as well as playing eight batsmen and attempting to get more overs out of our all-rounders."

"The six games up here taught us a lot, especially the three games against New Zealand in tough conditions.

"The adaptability of our players to work through varied conditions and to play in many different ways is the appealing component,"

During the two series, Australia tested Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Ashton Agar, Sean Abbott, and others with varying degrees of success, but McDonald said he is not in a hurry to make a decision because Finch will continue to serve as captain through the upcoming T20 World Cup in October and November.

The (T20) World Cup is likely coming to an end, he remarked.

"We have some time to think about what those possibilities may be.

"At this point, the (T20) World Cup is more pressing than filling the captaincy vacancy because we have it in front of us."

After the T20 World Cup, Australia's next 50-over fixture is a three-match ODI Series against England in November.
