The Colombo Strikers are gearing up to build a formidable squad as they enter the upcoming Lanka Premier League (LPL) auction, scheduled to take place in Colombo on Wednesday.
With the inclusion of Pakistan Captain Babar Azam, talented fast bowler Naseem Shah, and Sri Lankan T20 stars Matheesha Pathirana and Chamika Karunaratne, the Strikers have already laid a strong foundation for the LPL 2023.
Expressing his anticipation for the auction, Babar Azam stated, "The auction is a crucial aspect of any franchise cricket tournament. We have discussed the type of players we need, and we will undoubtedly aim to assemble the strongest side in the tournament."
Simon Helmot, Head Coach of the Colombo Strikers, emphasized their strategy, saying, "T20 cricket has evolved over the years. We will seek to acquire explosive batsmen and wicket-taking bowlers. Our aim is to play an aggressive brand of cricket, and we need the right set of players to execute our plans."
Bowling Coach Chaminda Vaas discussed their approach to building a strong bowling unit, stating, "We have witnessed the impact of local players in franchise cricket. We have shortlisted several names that we would like to acquire in the auction. Our focus is on constructing a well-balanced bowling unit, and we hope to achieve that during the auction."
Assistant Coach Jerome Jayaratne acknowledged the challenges of the auction and highlighted their interest in young local talents. "The auction is always a tricky process. We need to remain calm and composed. We will set budgets for each player and adhere to them. While we will look for superstars, our primary focus will be on nurturing young local talents."
Owner of the Colombo Strikers, Sagar Khanna, emphasized the importance of a strong start, stating, "To make an impact from the beginning, we must be on point during the auction. With our competent coaching staff and analysts, our franchise is preparing diligently. We aim to put our best foot forward and construct the best possible team."
The Colombo Strikers will make their debut in the Lanka Premier League in July-August 2023, ready to showcase their strength and competitiveness.
