At Bristol, Northamptonshire recovered from 147/5 to finish Day 1 on 232/5 against Gloucestershire.
Ricardo Vasconcelos (37) and Emilio Gay (44) shared a 67-run opening-wicket stand after Chris Dent won the toss and asked them to bat. But Northamptonshire lost five wickets for 80 before Adam Rossington (66*) and Harry Gouldstone (32*) came to the rescue by adding 85 before the close of play.
Glamorgan v Essex, Cardiff
Glamorgan 134 (Douthwaite 39; Snater 6-39) lead Essex 92/2 (Browne 50*; Van der Gugten 1-14) by 42 runs.
Essex reached 92/2 at Day 1 stumps after bowling out Glamorgan for 134 at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff.
Shane Snater (6-39) and Simon Harmer (3-46) ran through Glamorgan after they opted to bat. They were 86/8 at one point before Daniel Douthwaite (39) and Lukas Carey (29) added 46 for the ninth wicket. Carey was the last to be dismissed, by Snater.
Essex lost Alastair Cook for a three-ball duck, and Tom Westley for eight. Nick Browne (50*) and Daniel Lawrence (29*) then added an unbeaten 51 for the third wicket to help Essex finish on a decent position at the day end.
