Let’s have a quick round-up of all the actions from Day 2 of the County Championship 2021 fixture of Group 1.

Worcestershire v Derbyshire, New Road

Worcestershire 421 (Haynes 97; Melton 3-76) lead Derbyshire 91/3 (Madsen 31*; Leach 1-23) by 330 runs.

Resuming the day on 336/7, Worcestershire’s last three wickets added 85 runs in the morning session to take their first-innings total to 421. Ed Barnard (90) became the second batter to get out in the nineties, after Jack Haynes fell three short of his century a day earlier. Barnard added 45 for the last wicket with Dillon Pennington (24). Dustin Melton picked up 3-76, while both Matthew Critchley and Samuel Conners returned with two apiece.

Derbyshire then lost three wickets for 91. Wayne Madsen (31) and Ben McDermott (18) are at the crease. The duo did well to survive the last fifteen overs of the day.

Durham v Essex, Chester-le-Street

Essex 182 (Pepper 92; Rushworth 4-32, Raine 4-45) and 263/8 (Wheater 81; Raine 3-51) lead Durham 99 (Bancroft 20; S Cook 4-38) by 346 runs

Durham could only add 31 runs to their overnight tally. They got skittled out for 99 in their first innings to Sam Cook (4-38), Jamie Porter (3-27) and Peter Siddle (3-29). The Essex bowlers took nine of their ten wickets without the help of a fielder.

In reply, Essex lost their top three batters inside 10 overs, then another two by the 19th, before Ryan ten Doeschate  and Adam Wheater steadied the ship. Wheater got run out on 81 while ten Doeschate made 55.

Having played over 100 balls for his 30, Simon Harmer is still at the crease with Cook. Essex lead by 346 runs, and an overnight declaration is on the cards.

Warwickshire v Nottinghamshire, Edgbaston

Warwickshire 341 (Rhodes 91; Paterson 5-90) lead Nottinghamshire 173/3 (Slater 77; Norwell 3-55) by 168 runs

Liam Norwell (37) and Oliver Hannon-Dalby (24) chipped in with valuable contributions from down the order after half-centuries from Will Rhodes, Sam Hain and Matthew Lamb guided Warwickshire to 341. Norwell hit three sixes in his 37 but not a single four. For Nottinghamshire, Dane Paterson claimed a five-wicket haul.

Ben Slater (77) and Haseeb Hameed (39) then provided Notts with a solid start, adding 72 runs before the latter was bowled by Norwell (3-55). Norwell also got Ben Duckett, then Slater at the stroke of stumps. Joe Clark is on 48, and Notts finished the day on 173/3.
