Four teams from Group 1 were in action on Day 2 of the fifth round of the County Championship. Let us have a look at how it went for them.

Nottinghamshire vs Essex, Trent Bridge

Essex 99 (Browne 53; Fletcher 6-24) and 129/3 (Browne 60*; James 1-24) trail Nottinghamshire 323 (Mullaney 117; Snater 7-98) by 95 runs

Nottinghamshire had resumed Day 2 at 188/4, with an 89-run lead. After Lyndon James (51) and Tom Moores fell cheaply early in the morning, skipper Steven Mullaney led from the front. Mullaney smashed 20 fours in his 117 before being bowled by Peter Siddle (1-72). After that, Stuard Board (41) and Liam Patterson-White (22) made valuable contributions with the bat in the late stage of their innings.

The pick of the bowler for Essex of the second day was Shane Snater. He returned with career-best figures of 7-98 to restrict their opponents for 323.

Trailing by 224, Essex did not get the ideal start they wanted. Alastair Cook (35) and Nick Browne added a 63-run opening stand before James trapped Cook leg-before. Skipper Tom Westley returned for his second score of 1 in the match.

Like the first innings, Browne stood tall from the other end to help his side reach 129/3 by the stumps on Day 2. He is still out there, on 60. Broad, James and Dane Paterson picked up a wicket apiece.

Warwickshire v Worcestershire, Edgbaston

Warwickshire 343 (Yates 104, Burgess 101; Barnard 3-76) lead Worcestershire 198/4 (Libby 74, Haynes 52*; Rhodes 2-26) by 145 runs

Riding on hundreds from Robert Yates (104) and Michael Burgess (101), Warwickshire piled 343 runs. Tim Bresnan (20) and Danny Briggs (24) played their part at the end. Ed Barnard has had three wickets to his name, while Joe Leach, Josh Tongue and Brett D’Oliveira had a couple apiece.

In reply, following Daryl Mitchell’s early departure, Jake Libby and Tom Fell (20) took the responsibility to rebuild the Worcestershire innings. Libby got out for 74 to Olly Stone. Jack Haynes then remained unbeaten at Day 2 stumps, scoring 52 to hang the contest in the balance. Will Rhodes picked up two wickets.
