Six teams from Group 1 were in action in the County Championship fixture 2021.

Durham v Essex, Chester-le-Street

Essex 182 (Pepper 92; Rushworth 4-32, Raine 4-45) and 301 (Wheater 81; Raine 5-64) beat Durham 99 (Bancroft 20; S Cook 4-38) and 189 (Lees 48; Porter 4-31) by 195 runs

Resuming the day on 263/8, Essex stretched their second-innings total to 301. Simon Harmer remained unbeaten on 47, while Sam Cook chipped in with 22. For Durham, Ben Raine claimed 5-64, while Brydon Carse picked up 3-69.

Chasing 384, Durham lost Cameron Bancroft early. Skipper Scott Borthwick added 29 before getting nailed on the pads by Cook. Alex Lee failed two shy of his fifty, and Michael Jones threw away a solid start, getting leg-before after playing over 100 balls for 35.

Jones’ dismissal triggered a dramatic collapse and Durham got wrapped up for 189 after battling out for 87 overs. Jamie Porter returned impressive figures of 19-9-31-4. Peter Siddle had 3-47, while Cook got two wickets.

Warwickshire v Nottinghamshire, Edgbaston

Warwickshire 341 (Rhodes 91; Paterson 5-90) and 201/6 (Rhodes 63; Chappell 3-63) lead Nottinghamshire 297 (Slater 77; Norwell 4-64) by 245 runs

At Edgbaston, Will Rhodes and Robert Yates added 76 runs for the opening wicket before Michael Burgess’ fifty stretched Warwickshire lead to 245 runs. Burgess is still unbeaten on 61 as Warwickshire finished the day on 201/6.

Rhodes made 63 off 99 deliveries, and hit nine fours and a six before falling prey to Zak Chappell. Pieter Malan and Sam Haine too fell to Chappel, who finished the day with three dismissals.

Earlier in the day, Nottinghamshire made 297 in the first innings, courtesy fifties from Ben Slater and Joe Clark.

Worcestershire v Derbyshire, New Road

Worcestershire 421 (Haynes 97; Melton 3-76) lead Derbyshire 270 (Critchley 81*; Pennington 4-44) and 112/6 (Madsen 43*; Pennington 3-25) by 39 runs

At New Road, Derbyshire need another 39 runs to avoid an innings defeat against Worcestershire. They have four wickets in hand.

Derbyshire needed 272 to avoid the follow-on. They were 250/6 at one point, but eventually fell two runs short. Matthew Critchley remained unbeaten on 81, but Wayne Madsen (51) was the only one to provide him support. Dillon Pennington had 4-44, while Joe Leach, Ed Barnard and Alzarri Joseph claimed two wickets each.

Pennington (3-25) and Brett D’Oliveira (2-21) then reduced Derbyshire to 112/6 before stumps. Madsen is still out there, on 43.
