All four teams from Group 1 were in action on the final day of the fifth round of the County Championship. Let us have a look at how it went for them.

Nottinghamshire v Essex, Trent Bridge

Nottinghamshire 323 (Mullaney 117; Snater 7-98) beat Essex 99 (Browne 53; Fletcher 6-24) and 194 (Browne 64; James 4-51) by an innings and 30 runs

Nottinghamshire jumped to the top of Group 1 after they beat Essex by an innings and 30 runs. After yesterday’s washout, Essex resumed on 129/3. Nottinghamshire picked up all seven wickets before lunch to make sure they don't have to bat again.

Lyndon James finished with figures of 4-51, while Dane Paterson had three to his name. Luke Fletcher (2-42) had last batter James Porter (1) edging to Tom Moores’ gloves. Nick Browne top-scored for Essex, with a hard-fought 64 in 197 balls.

Defending champions Essex will try to forget this season’s miserable county campaign as quickly as they can. Tom Westley’s men have only managed to win one out of five matches. With that, they have finished the season at the fifth spot, over Derbyshire.

Warwickshire v Worcestershire, Edgbaston

Warwickshire 343 (Yates 104, Burgess 101; Bernard 3-76) and 70/3 (Malan 28; Joseph 2-22) drew with Worcestershire 364/8 decl. (Haynes 87; Rhodes 2-39).

Following Saturday’s washout, Warwickshire and Worcestershire expectedly ended their contest as a draw in Edgbaston. Worcestershire resumed the day on 198/4 and lost Riki Wessels (17) and Ben Cox (23) in the morning session. But Jack Haynes (87) and Ed Barnard (76*) firmly held their nerves. Worcestershire, 228/6 at one point, declared on 364/8.

In reply, Warwickshire finished on 70/3. Robert Yates, who had scored 104 in the first innings, fell early this time, for 5. Alzarri Joseph finished with figures of 2-22.

The draw cemented Warwickshire at second place in Group 1, behind Nottinghamshire. Worcestershire, on the other hand, remained at third place after drawing all five matches.
