All six teams of Group 3 were in action on Day 3 in the eighth round of the County Championship 2021. Let us have a look at how it went for them.

Yorkshire v Sussex, Headingley

Sussex 313 (Brown 127; Thompson 3-53) and 38/0 (Orr 23*) trail Yorkshire 558 (Malan 199; Atkins 5-98) by 207 runs

Dawid Malan missed out on a double hundred by a run against Sussex on Day 3 at Headingley. He was bowled by Irish off-spinner Jack Carson (3-124). Riding on that mammoth effort, Yorkshire piled up 558 in response to Sussex’s 313. Malan's career-best 219 came in his last innings for Yorkshire, in the Bob Willis Trophy in August 2020.

In reply, Sussex openers Ali Orr (23*) and Tom Haines (12*) batted out the final 23 overs before the close of play. They ended at 38/0, still 207 runs behind.

Glamorgan v Lancashire, Cardiff

Lancashire 173 (Bailey 31; Neser 3-46) and 164 (Davies 47; Neser 4-53) lost to Glamorgan 150 (Labuschagne 44; Mahmood 3-34) and 188/4 (Labuschagne 63*; Parkinson 1-22) by 6 wickets

Marnus Labuschagne scored an unbeaten 63 to help Glamorgan beat Lancashire by six wickets on Day 3 at Cardiff. This was Lancashire’s first defeat in the season.

Glamorgan resumed at 137/3. They needed 51 more to win the contest. After Kiran Carlson’s (16) early dismissal to Luke Wood, Labuschagne took them past the finishing line alongside skipper Chris Cooke (17*). Despite the win, Glamorgan still remain fourth at the end of this round.

Kent vs Northamptonshire, Canterbury

Northamptonshire 392 (Gay 101; Stevens 5-73) lead Kent 330/5 (Robinson 120; Kerrigan 2-80) by 62 runs

Northamptonshire resumed Day 3 at Canterbury at 362/5 after rain had washed out all of Day 2. They lost their last five wickets for just 30 before bowling out for 392. Darren Stevens (5-73) continued with his stupendous form to claim his 31st five-wicket haul.

For Kent, wicketkeeper Ollie Robinson (120), Jordan Cox (90) and Joe Denly (63) got their runs at a rapid pace. Riding on them, Kent ended at 330/5 in 69 overs before the close of play.

Kent trail by 62. A first-session charge, followed by a timely declaration, may open up the match.
