Four out of six teams of Group 3 were in action on Day 1 in the seventh round of the County Championship 2021. Let us have a look at how it went for them.
Lancashire v Yorkshire, Manchester
Yorkshire 159 (Duke 52; Bailey 3-6) lead Lancashire 95/1 (Davies 52; Olivier 1-27) by 64 runs
Lancashire were in the driver’s seat at stumps on Day 1 against Yorkshire at Old Trafford. In the absence of Joe Root, Yorkshire slumped to 21/6 at one stage. Nineteen-year-old Harry Duke (52) then counterattacked, with tailenders for company, to guide his team post a respective total.
Tom Bailey returned ridiculous figures of 3-6 from 14 overs, while Luke Wood and Danny Lam had two wickets each.
In reply, Keaton Jennings (22*) and Alex Davies (52) put on a 71-run opening stand before Duanne Olivier got rid of Davies. Jennings then added 24 runs with Luke Wells (11 not out) before the close of play. They now trail by just 65 with nine wickets in hand.
Sussex v Northamptonshire, Hove
Sussex 175 (Carson 52; Sanderson 5-45) lead Northamptonshire 91/4 (Keogh 24; Carson 1-19) by 84 runs
Northamptonshire’s Ben Sanderson picked up his third five-wicket haul in four innings to bundle Sussex for 175 on Day 1 at Hove. Sussex were 67/8 at one stage before Jack Carson (52) and Henry Crocombe (46 not out) acquired 99 runs for the ninth wicket. Both returned their respective highest First-class scores.
The South Africans, Wayne Parnell and Gareth Berg, claimed two wickets each, while Tom Taylor had one. Northants ended on 91/4, trailing by 84 runs. All four Sussex bowlers had a wicket apiece.
