Guyana Amazon Warriors survived an onslaught from Andre Russell to record the lowest successful defence in the history of Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and beat Jamaica Tallawahs by 14 run on Saturday (August 23).
Chasing 119 to win on a turning track Jamaica were tottering at 59 for 7 in 16 overs. With all other specialist batters back in the hut Russell was left to take the charge along with the tail. And when he took the 17th over for 11 runs, the 18th for 17, and the first two balls of the 19th for 10, it looked like he was going to win yet another game single-handedly.
However, at that point young Afghan medium pacer Naveen-ul-Haq showed some excellent death bowling skills and bowled four dot balls to Russell and also kept him off strike for the last over. With 22 to defend Keemo Paul executed his gameplans pretty well. Though Russell a six in the final ball of the innings which brought up his half-century but the game was gone by that time.
Earlier after winning toss and batting first Guyana had a terrific start in the powerplay as the scored 56 for the first wicket in 5.4 overs. However, as soon as the field restrictions Jamaican bowlers were all over their opponents as as Mujeeb-ur-Rahman and Sandeep Lamichhane ran riot. From 56 for no loss, Guyana were 57/3 within four deliveries.
The Jamaican spinners utilised the slowness of the surface to their advantage as they got wickets at regular intervals as the opponent lost 10 for 67 and with figures of 3 for 18 Mujeeb was the chief architect of this comeback. Also, he was well supported by Lamichhane, who gave away just 8 runs in his four overs and took couple of crucial breakthroughs.
Later, thanks to some deft touches of Naveen, Guyana managed to cross the 115-run mark and in the end it proved to be enough on that no so ideal surface.
Guyana Amazon Warriors 118 all out (King 29, Hemraj 21, Taylor 21, Naveen 14; Brathwaite 3/14, Mujeeb 3/18, Lamichhane 2/8, Russell 1/16) beat Jamaica Tallawahs 104/7 (Russell 52*, Powell 23, Asif Ali 14; Green 2/10, Hemraj 1/3, Nedd 1/10, Naveen 1/22, Tahir 1/26, Paul 1/33) by 14 runs.
