Binny bids adieu to cricket

Stuart Binny has retired from all forms of cricket. Binny played 6 Tests, 14 ODIs and 3 T20Is. Against Bangladesh in 2014, he picked up 6-4 – still the best figures ODI figures for India. His last appearance was in 2016, in a T20I against West Indies in Florida. He conceded 31 runs in an over and never got another opportunity.

Binny was a key member of the all-conquering Karnataka side of the mid-2010s. He later played for Nagaland.

‘It has given me tremendous joy to have represented my country at the highest international level. I would like to acknowledge the huge role the BCCI has played in my cricketing journey. Their support and faith over the years have been invaluable,’ he said.

Chandimal returns to Sri Lanka squad

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced a 24-member squad for their upcoming series against South Africa. Three ODIs and as many T20Is are lined up, starting 2 September.

Kusal Perera, now recovered from Covid-19, is back in the side, as is Dinesh Chandimal. Dasun Shanaka will continue to lead, with Dhananjaya de Silva as deputy.

Akash Deep replaces Sundar

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) roped in Akash Deep as replacement for Washington Sundar, who will miss the second half of the IPL due to a finger injury. A fast bowler from Bengal, Akash Deep was a net bowler for the franchise.

Sundar suffered a finger injury during the practice match ahead of the Test series between India and England. This was RCB’s fifth replacement between the two phases of the IPL. They have already signed up Dushmantha Chameera, Tim David, Wanindu Hasaranga and George Garton.

Vasoo Paranjpe dies aged 82

Legendary Mumbai coach Vasudeo ‘Vasoo’ Paranjpe passed away at his residence in Mumbai. He was 82. Paranjpe mentored many cricketers, most famously Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Sachin Tendulkar, and remained a popular figure in Mumbai cricket. Tributes poured in from all corners of the world.

Before his coaching days, Paranjpe played 29 First-class matches, for Baroda and Mumbai. He scored 785 runs with two hundreds.

His son Jatin played four ODIs for India, and co-authored his father’s biography, Cricket Drona: For the Love of Vasoo Paranjpe.
