Credit: APFormer England fast bowler Darren Gough was appointed as bowling consultant for England’s tour of New Zealand. Gough is a level 3 qualified coach per ECB standards but hasn’t quite donned a similar role before.

England’s newly anointed head coach Chris Silverwood is a long term friend of Gough and it is believed that this association also played a role in Gough’s appointment.

“I’m delighted to have Darren on board,” said Silverwood. “I have known him a long time and his vast knowledge and experience at international level will drive our bowling unit forward leading into the two-match Test series. He will be excellent around the group and will settle in quickly.”

Gough added: “It is a tremendous honour to be asked by Chris Silverwood and Ashley Giles to be involved in this elite environment. I very much look forward to working with all the bowlers and helping them improve.

“I will gain a lot from the experience and to work at this level will do benefit me as a coach for the long-term. I can’t wait to get cracking.”

Gough is appointed on an interim basis for this tour with full-time bowling coach Kevin Shine recently leaving the ECB. A full-time appointment might not happen before the next English season and Gough will look to make a mark here.

Gough will fly out to join the Test squad in the build-up to the two-match series in New Zealand, which starts at Mount Maunganui on November 21.
