In the third and final T20 International at the County Ground, England spinner Sophie Ecclestone's all-around effort enabled the hosts overcome South Africa Women by 38 runs to win the series 3-0.

At the tail end of England's innings on Monday, Ecclestone showed off some clean hitting by scoring an unbeaten 33 off only 12 balls to lead her team to a whopping 176/6 in the allowed 20 overs.

She scored her highest T20I total after an entertaining knock in which she smacked four boundaries and two huge sixes. She followed that up by taking two key wickets to ensure South Africa failed to successfully chase down the runs.

Against the Proteas, England used seven bowlers, with youthful quick Issy Wong (1/40) bowling South Africa opener Lara Goodall cleanly in the first over of the chase.

Tazmin Brits, the third batter, led the way with an elegant half-century as the Proteas recovered the early loss of Goodall to put together a number of useful partnerships. However, without the services of dependable all-rounder Marizanne Kapp and captain Sune Luus, the Proteas were always going to struggle as Ecclestone took the crucial wicket of the perilous Laura Wolvaardt for 13, and the needed rate kept rising up.

Freya Kemp (2/18), who tricked the Brits during the 18th over of the run chase to ensure victory for the hosts, virtually put an end to whatever chance the Proteas had as experienced duo Mignon du Preez and Chloe Tryon tried to hit out during the closing overs.

Now that the Commonwealth Games are starting this week in Birmingham, both teams will focus on winning a medal there.

Given that they are playing at home and that important players like Nat Sciver, Danni Wyatt, and Ecclestone seem to be in good shape, England will be seen as a top contender for the gold medal. They also have plenty of depth at their disposal.

Brief scores: England 176/6 in 20 overs (Danni Wyatt 30, Sophie Ecclestone 33 not out; Nonkululeko Mlaba 3/22) beat South Africa 138/6 in 20 overs (Tazmin Brits 59; Sophie Ecclestone 2/24).
