England have sacked their head coach Chris Silverwood in the wake of a disastrous Ashes series which they lost by a 4-0. The decision came just a day after Ashley Giles was dismissed from his position as a director of cricket.
'It's been an absolute honour to be England Head Coach, and I'm extremely proud to have worked alongside our players and staff,' said Silverwood. 'I want to thank them all for the hard work and commitment they have given during my time in the role and I wish them all the very best moving forward.'
Silverwood had succeeded Trevor Bayliss in 2019. His tenure began with a 3-1 series win against South Africa. England even started 2021 with a 2-0 win in Sri Lanka and a 1-0 lead in India. However, they lost the series in India 1-3, following which Silverwood also took on selection responsibility.
England subsequently lost 0-1 to New Zealand and are trailing 1-2 against India, both at home, and have lost the Ashes 0-4 in Australia.
'During his time in the role Chris has given absolutely everything to make a success of it. He is a man of great integrity, who players and staff alike have enjoyed working with,' said Tom Harrison, the ECB's chief executive.
England lost the five-match T20I series to West Indies 2-3. The three-match Test series will start from 8 March, for which they are likely to rope in Andrew Strauss as interim coach.
