Online fantasy games have grown at a rapid pace in the last few years. Deeper penetration of high-speed internet, coupled with the unparalleled popularity of cricket in India, has provided immense boost to the fantasy gaming segment. However, there have been some pressing issues regarding its legality.

As many as three states in India – Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana – have banned Fantasy Leagues or any online games where the real money is involved. These states argue that fantasy gaming is akin to gambling, and has driven many youngsters into serious debts and even suicides.

The fantasy gaming industry lies under the purview of the colonial-era Public Gambling Act of India, 1867. As per this law, gambling in any form is a punishable offence.

However, gaming platforms, for long, maintained that Fantasy Leagues are a game of skill, not of chance. According to them, one needs to have an in-depth knowledge of the game and its players to create fantasy teams. Not anyone can win hefty sums simply by relying on luck.

There are many factors that come into play while making fantasy teams. These require a great understanding of the game. Knowledge of statistics, records, weather and pitch conditions invariably Fantasy League players.

Such knowledge and expertise cannot be picked up in a day or two. It needs dedication and hard work to build up such skill. In fact, a study conducted by a group of statisticians from MIT has already shown that fantasy games are based on skill, albeit with a little bit of luck.
