The 35-year-old dropped to No. 4 in a few games to give youthful all-rounder Cameron Green a few shots at the top, but Australia T20I captain Aaron Finch has already stated he will return as opener in the two final T20Is against England and the ICC T20 World Cup at home.
The 23-year-old Green did well in the three-match series against England on Sunday after scoring two half-centuries in the away series against India. However, he has since struggled to post strong performances in the two-match series against the West Indies and the first match of the three-match series against England. Australia lost the game on Sunday in Perth by an eight-run margin as the tall all-arounder could only muster a single.
In order to prepare the team for any unforeseen circumstances that might emerge during the T20 World Cup, according to Finch, Green was given the chance to begin the batting.
"We'll continue experimenting. For the following game, as was always the intention, I'm going to return to the top, "Before this week's second and third T20Is against England in Canberra, Finch spoke to Fox Cricket.
"In order to prepare for the World Cup, we would get to the first two (T20s against the West Indies) and then this game. Giving "Greeny" (Green) a chance at the top and encouraging him to keep trying new things was all that was involved. You must be ready after this brief burst, especially (with) guys recovering from numerous injuries "Finch added.
So we're just trying to get as many games for Greeny in case he gets called up," Finch said.
Although Green is not one of the 15 Australian players selected for the T20 World Cup, there have recently been rumours that he might be added at the last minute.
