T. Dilip, India's fielding coach, confirmed on Wednesday that middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer will miss the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, which begins here on Friday.

"Injuries are unavoidable in sports. We have excellent medical facilities that are well-equipped. We are working together (with NCA). Shreyas has been ruled out of this series. (We will provide) additional updates as they become available "Dilip stated during the pre-series press conference.

Iyer had a lower-back injury recurrence during the fourth Test against Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium and did not bat in India's first innings score of 571.

The BCCI said on day four of play on Sunday that Iyer had gone for scans after the right-handed batter complained of pain in his lower back after the third day's play and that the medical team was monitoring him.

The BCCI issued a statement ahead of the start of day five of play on Monday, where the match ended in a draw "Shreyas Iyer will no longer take part in this Test. A professional opinion will be sought."

Iyer missed the first Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Nagpur, as well as the three-match ODI series against New Zealand in January and the subsequent T20I series, due to a lower back injury.

Iyer will now miss the ODIs against Australia due to a lower back injury. As of now, Iyer is said to be back at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for injury recovery and rehabilitation.

Iyer will also captain the Kolkata Knight Riders in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, which begins on March 31. Kolkata, the two-time champions, will play their first match of the tournament on April 1 at the PCA Stadium in Mohali against Shikhar Dhawan's Punjab Kings.
