India beat England by four wickets, clinch fifth Under-19 World Cup title Image

India won the ICC Under-19 World Cup for the fifth time with a four-wicket win against England in the final of the 2022 edition in Antigua.

England were unbeaten in the tournament until the final, but Raj Bawa (5-31) and Ravi Kumar (4-34) wreaked havoc to knock them over for 189 in 44.5 overs. After After opting to bat, they were left reeling at 91/7 before a 93-run stand between James Rew (95) and James Sales (34*) took them to a fighting total.

Coming to defend, Josh Boyden induced an edge from Angkrish Raghuvanshi, India’s leading run-scorer of the tournament, with the second ball of their innings. But Harnoor Singh and Shaik Rasheed held on until the 18th over, adding 49 for the second wicket. Then wicketkeeper Alex Horton took a one-handed diving catch high to his right to send Harnoor (21) back.

Yash Dhull and Rasheed batted sensibly as well, but India lost two wickets for two runs to give England a glimmer of hope. But Nishant Sindhu and Bawa (35) kept the scoreboard going, adding 67 for the fifth wicket before Sandhu saw his side home in the 48th over with an unbeaten 54-ball 50. Dinesh Bana (13*) completed the chase with back-to-back sixes.

England 189 in 44.5 overs (James Rew 95; Raj Bawa 5-31) lost to India 195/6 in 47.4 overs (Nishant Sindhu 50*; Joshua Boyden 2-24) by 4 wickets with 14 balls to spare. Player of the Match: Raj Bawa.
