India vs West Indies T20I : Statistical Study Image

India is staring their tour of West Indies and USA with the first T20 International today at Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground, Lauderhill in Florida. This is the second instance of India and West Indies playing the T20 leg of the tour in the USA after the two T20 matches played during India’s 2016 tour.

Team Rivalry – Win-Loss Record

India and West Indies have only played 11 T20 international matches so far. From 2009 to 2016, they played five T20Is and four of those matches were part of the World T20 in 2009, 2010, 2014 and 2016. Five more T20Is were played between these two since the last World T20 in India and one match was abandoned during this period.

The win-loss record for the teams are currently standing at 5-5 with India winning last three T20I matches in November 2018 when West Indies last toured India.

Captaincy records

Interestingly India’s first T20I win against West Indies came under Suresh Raina as MS Dhoni was not present in that tour just after the 2011 World Cup win and IPL. Rohit Sharma led the Indian team in the 2018 series and he is the most successful Indian captain in this fixture with a 3-0 win-loss ratio.

For West Indies, their five wins came under Chris Gayle (2), Carlos Brathwaite (2) and Darren Sammy. Darren Sammy was the winning captain in the semi-final of the World T20 at Wankhede in Mumbai. Post which West Indies famously lifted their second World T20 title after a tight final at the Eden Gardens.

Team Totals – Highest & Lowest

The highest ever team total between India and West Indies in T20I is 245/6 scored by West Indies in the first ever match at Lauderhill in 2016. Interestingly, India replied with 244/4, which is their highest ever T20I total against West Indies. This gives some indication of the upcoming run fest. These are the only instance for both teams posting 200 plus total against each other.

If we focus on lowest team total, the five lowest totals are all posted by West Indies with the lowest being 109/8 at Eden Gardens in 2018. India’s lowest total in a completed innings against West Indies is 153/7, which they scored at Lord’s in the first meeting of these two teams.

Rohit Sharma has played 10 out of those 11 matches and scored 334 with an average on 47.71 with one hundred. On the other hand, Evin Lewis has played only three T20Is against India and scored 232 runs with two centuries out of the three innings. He boasts an average of 116 against India in T20Is. Virat Kohli comes third in the list of highest run scorer with 212 runs with an average of 53.

Except Rohit and Lewis, the only player to score a T20I hundred in India-West Indies rivalry is KL Rahul with his maiden T20 hundred coming in Lauderhill. Chris Gayle and Shikhar Dhawan are only players to post 90 plus scores in these matches.

Darren Sammy holds the record for best bowling record in a match with spell of 4/16 at Port of Spain in 2011. Bravo also got 4/38 at Lord’s. For India, the best bowling analysis came in November 2018, when Kuldeep Yadav took 3/13 at Eden Gardens. There are four more bowlers who have delivered three-wicket spells in India-West Indies T20I matches.
