On December 23 in Kochi, the IPL player auction for the 2023 season will take place. In contrast to the major auction that the ten teams had to basically construct their squads from start for before the 2022 edition, this one will be a mini auction.

Each team will have an additional INR 5 crore (about US $607,000) to spend at this auction in addition to the funds left over from their previous auction purse plus the value of the players they release, bringing the total purse to INR 95 crore (around US $11.5 million).

After the 2017 auction, Punjab Kings had the most money remaining with INR 3.45 crore (about US $425,000), while Lucknow Super Giants had used up all of their funds. Royal Challengers Bangalore was next with INR 1.55 crore or roughly US $188,000, followed by Rajasthan Royals with INR 0.95 crore or roughly US $115,000, and Kolkata Knight Riders with INR 0.45 crore or roughly US $55,000. Chennai Super Kings had INR 2.95 crore (around US $358,000) remaining.

Gujarat Titans, the defending champions, had INR 0.15 crore (about US $18,000) left, while Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Delhi Capitals each had INR 0.10 crore (around US $12,000).

After the franchises submit the list of players that are being released by the deadline of November 15, the IPL is anticipated to complete the player pool for the auction by early December.

The mini sale will be completed in just one day, as opposed to the mega auction in February, which took place over two days. However, mini auctions have historically resulted in some of the most expensive purchases, particularly in the category of foreign players.

Franchises are interested in seeing if allrounders Ben Stokes, Sam Curran, and Cameron Green will enter the auction this year. If they do, they'll probably be in great demand.

In the 2022 auction, three teams—Punjab, Delhi, and Lucknow—bought just seven foreign players; consequently, they might be searching for someone to fill the eighth and final position. Six organisations have also added injury replacements for the previous season, and they will need to choose whether to keep the replacement player, the original player, or both if the player restriction permits.
