The second ODI between Ireland and Zimbabwe, taking place at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast, was called off. The heavy rain invaded the ground after the Ireland innings, and no further play was possible.

The three-match series still remains 1-0 in favour of Zimbabwe, who won the series opener by 38 runs less than 48 hours ago.

Earlier, Ireland’s top six batters – William Porterfield (67), Paul Stirling (33), Andrew Balbirnie (40), Harry Tector (55), George Dockrell (28 in 19 balls), and Lorcan Tucker (32 in 20) – chipped in with handy contributions to help their side post 282/8 after they were asked to bat.

However, the weather did not allow their bowlers to make an impact to level the series.

Porterfield and Stirling again got Ireland off to a decent start, adding 82 in 135 balls before Sean Williams (1-29) got Stirling in the 23rd over. Balbirnie and Tector carried the momentum to lay the platform for the finishers. Dockrell and Tucker did not disappoint, and took Ireland to a challenging total.

For Zimbabwe, Richard Ngarava returned 3-52, and Blessing Muzarabani 1-55.

Zimbabwe will play one last time on this tour against Ireland on 13 September, for the third ODI at the same venue.

Brief scores: Ireland 282/8 in 50 overs (William Porterfield 67; Richard Ngarava 3-52) vs Zimbabwe. No result.
