The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) announced on Monday that legendary Indian fast bowler Jhulan Goswami, England women’s captain Heather Knight, and former Men’s ODI World Cup winning captain Eoin Morgan have joined the MCC World Cricket Committee.
Jhulan Goswami, a recipient of the Padma Shri and Arjuna Awards, is widely regarded as one of the fastest bowlers in women's cricket. She represented India in 12 Tests, 204 ODIs, and 68 T20Is from 2002 to 2022, amassing 355 wickets across formats, the highest by any bowler in women's international cricket.
In 2007, she won the ICC Women's Player of the Year award and reached the number one spot in the ICC Women's ODI bowling rankings in January 2016. Jhulan also captained the Indian women’s cricket team from 2008 to 2011.
With 255 wickets in ODIs, Jhulan holds the record for the most wickets in women's international cricket. She played in five Women’s ODI World Cups - 2005, 2009, 2013, 2017, and 2022. Jhulan remains the leading wicket-taker in the history of the Women’s Cricket World Cups, with 43 scalps. She was honored as an Honorary Life Member of MCC in April 2023.
Heather Knight has been captaining the England women's team since 2016 and led them to victory in the Women’s ODI World Cup at Lord’s in 2017, just a year after assuming the role. An all-rounder, Knight has been a pioneer for the women's game in England, accumulating over 5,000 international runs in white-ball cricket and scoring 705 runs in her ten Test matches.
Eoin Morgan, known for his exceptional leadership skills, captained the England men's team in both ODIs and T20Is. He gained immense respect and became one of the most successful international skippers of the modern era. Morgan famously lifted the Men’s ODI World Cup trophy after a thrilling final against New Zealand in 2019. He was granted Honorary Life Membership of MCC earlier this year.
Mike Gatting, Chair of the MCC World Cricket Committee, expressed delight in welcoming Jhulan, Heather, and Eoin to the committee. He acknowledged their outstanding performances at the pinnacle of international cricket and highlighted their valuable insights into the elite level of the game. Gatting also emphasized the importance of growing female representation on the committee, recognizing the growth and significance of women's cricket. He mentioned that Jhulan and Heather would join Clare Connor and Suzie Bates in providing firsthand insight into the women's game.
MCC also announced that former England captain Sir Alastair Cook has stepped down from the committee to focus on the final years of his playing career.
The MCC World Cricket Committee is scheduled to meet on Monday and Tuesday at Lord’s, ahead of the second Men’s Ashes Test between England and Australia. The committee's discussions and outcomes from the meeting will be shared after the conclusion of the match.
