England batter Jonny Bairstow has opened up about his challenging journey back to the cricket field after being sidelined for eight months due to a horrific leg injury. The 33-year-old, who wondered if he would ever walk again, expressed his relief and pride as he prepares to make his comeback just in time for the Ashes.
Bairstow's absence from the international scene was the result of a freak leg injury he suffered while playing golf in September 2022. The incident led to a broken leg and dislocated ankle, requiring surgery and an extensive rehabilitation process. Prior to the injury, Bairstow had been in outstanding form in Test cricket, amassing 1061 runs in 10 matches throughout the year.
The injury forced Bairstow to miss England's triumphant T20 World Cup campaign in Australia and the historic Test series victory against Pakistan. The road to recovery has been filled with doubts and uncertainties for the talented batsman, who recently returned to competitive cricket with Yorkshire in the County Championship.
"There are moments where you question whether you'll ever walk, jog, run, or play cricket again. Those thoughts do cross your mind, but it depends on how much you dwell on them. Until you're back on the field, you wonder if things will feel the same," Bairstow revealed in an interview with ICC.
He added, "It's quite natural that people notice a slight limp. I don't know anyone who has had a significant lower leg injury and walked exactly the same as before. There will be little limps and aches; that's just part of the process. Whether it's knees, hips, ankles, or lower back, your body will adapt after a traumatic injury. I won't be running exactly the same as last year, and that's okay."
Bairstow's return to the international scene comes at the expense of Ben Foakes, who performed admirably in Bairstow's absence but missed out on selection for the Test against Ireland. Despite the difficult decision, Bairstow expressed empathy for Foakes and believes the talented wicket-keeper will soon find his way back into the squad.
"He's been a crucial part of the team over the past year, and I have a lot of respect for how he handled the situation. It's never easy, and I've experienced it myself. I have no doubt that Ben will be back in the fold soon," Bairstow stated.
Bairstow's emotional return to the international setup was marked by a phone call from Test coach Brendon McCullum, which filled him with pride and joy. Reflecting on the moment, Bairstow described it as "awesome" and acknowledged the tough times he had faced throughout the winter.
With his injury ordeal behind him, Bairstow is eager to make a strong impact on the upcoming Ashes series. His resilience and determination serve as an inspiration to all, reminding us of the strength and passion that drives athletes to overcome adversity.
