While Indian cricket team is set to start World Test Championship journey, the skipper is ready to register new record to his name. One more Test ton to his name and Kohli will join Ricky Ponting.
While Kohli will take on the field with the aim of a successful start to the tournament for India, he will also eye on another personal record. The skipper just needs just one more century to equal Ricky Ponting’s tally of 19 Test tons as a captain. If Kohli manages to hit one century in Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Antigua, both will be placed at the second spot. Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith tops the table with 25 centuries in 109 Test matches including 17 centuries in 56 overseas encounters. Overall, currently Kohli has 25 centuries, which include six double hundreds in Test cricket.
With the two-match Test series against West Indies, scheduled to begin on August 22 Virat Kohli and his team will begin their quest for the World Test Championship title. After winning ODI and T20 series against the hosts, and a good practice against West Indies A, Indian team is ready for the next fight. The Test squad will resume action as favorites after the historic win against Australia earlier this year.
Virat Kohli, the captain of Indian cricket team has always been a fan of Test cricket and stressed on the importance of the Championship. “We all were looking forward to it. We felt like there were a few series in between where after big tours we felt like maybe a one-off Test or a couple of Tests were not apt for the moment. But this gives a lot of context to all kinds of cricket we’re going to play,” Kohli said about the World Test Championship. He believes, “It will be challenging, but all the more exciting and all the teams I am sure are going to enjoy a lot through this whole journey of the Test Championship.”
