Through the 15-person roster for the Asia Cup 2022, stalwart batsman Virat Kohli and opener KL Rahul made their return to Twenty20 international play on Monday.

However, because of a back ailment, Jasprit Bumrah, the competition's pace spearhead, will be absent. Harshal Patel also cannot participate because of a rib injury.

After his journey to England came to an end on July 17, Bumrah did not tour the West Indies and took a break from the next ODI series in Zimbabwe.

"Due to injury, Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel were not available for selection. At the NCA in Bengaluru, they are presently receiving rehabilitation "the BCCI stated in a release.

After putting on great performances during the T20I series against the West Indies, where he was named "Player of the Series," young left-arm bowler Arshdeep Singh has kept his spot in the team.

After being sidelined for a while, Kohli, who last played during India's tour of England in July, is back in the lineup for the next ODIs against Zimbabwe and the white-ball trip of the West Indies.

Rahul also makes a comeback after missing the home T20I series against South Africa due to a groyne issue. After that, in Germany, he had surgery for a sports hernia, which prevented him from travelling to England.

Rahul was scheduled to return during India's T20I series against the West Indies, however he was left out of the trip to the Caribbean due to a positive Covid-19 test.

Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan were unable to make the team due to Yuzvendra Chahal's return after being rested for the five-match T20I series against the West Indies.

Shreyas Iyer, Deepak Chahar, and Axar Patel will serve as backup players for the Asia Cup 2022, according to the BCCI.

From August 27 to September 11, 2022, the UAE will host the Asia Cup. There will be six teams competing in the 15th edition of the competition, plus a qualifier team.

India, the most successful team with seven championships, enters the contest as the defending champions. On August 28, they played Pakistan to begin defending their championship.

Due to 2022 being a T20 World Cup year, this competition will be played in a T20 format, as opposed to the previous edition's ODI format.

India is in Group A with Pakistan and a team that qualified, while Group B is made up of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.

In the group stage, each team faces off against the other once, with the top two teams from each group moving on to the Super 4 round. The top two Super 4 teams will advance to the championship game.
