In a significant development, senior Sri Lankan cricketer Lahiru Thirimanne has taken the decision to step away from all forms of international cricket, a decision that has been accepted by the Sri Lanka Cricket's Executive Committee. Thirimanne's retirement was revealed through a formal resignation letter he sent to Sri Lanka Cricket, marking the end of an era for the talented player on the international stage.
The announcement came in the wake of a recent meeting by the Executive Committee, during which the decision to accept Thirimanne's resignation was made. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board communicated this development through an official release on Friday.
Ashley De Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket, conveyed the organization's well-wishes to Thirimanne in his future endeavors, highlighting the player's significant contributions to Sri Lankan cricket across all formats. "We take this opportunity to wish Thirimanne the best in his future endeavors, and his services to Sri Lanka Cricket covering all forms of the game will be well remembered," De Silva said.
Over his international career, Thirimanne amassed a commendable record, representing Sri Lanka in 44 Test matches, 127 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 26 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). His combined efforts led to a tally of over 5500 runs for his country, showcasing his proficiency across the spectrum of international cricket.
Thirimanne's decision to retire was initially shared with the public on July 23 through a heartfelt post on social media. Reflecting on his journey, he expressed gratitude for the opportunities the sport had bestowed upon him. "It has been an absolute honor to represent my country for the past few years. This game has given me so much over the years. But with a lot of mixed feelings, I am here to announce my retirement from international cricket with immediate effect," Thirimanne posted on Facebook.
Known for his elegant left-handed style, Thirimanne managed to secure three Test centuries and four ODI hundreds during his career. Notably, he was a part of the Sri Lankan squad that clinched victory in the 2014 ICC Men's T20 World Cup against India in Mirpur. Thirimanne's involvement extended to three T20 World Cup campaigns and he also contributed to Sri Lanka's appearances in the 2015 and 2019 50-over World Cups.
Thirimanne's final international appearance for Sri Lanka took place during the second Test against India in Bengaluru in March of the preceding year. His retirement marks the conclusion of a cricketing journey that began when he made his international debut in 2010.
