Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, Match 9: Shakib, Mahmudullah steer Bangladesh to Super 12 with huge win over PNG Image

Bangladesh qualified for the Super 12 of the Men's T20 World Cup 2021 after a thumping 84-run win against Papua New Guinea in Match 9 of the competition at the  Al Amerat Cricket Ground on 21 October.

PNG were asked to chase 182 to register win their first ever World Cup match. They stumbled right from the beginning, losing four wickets inside the Powerplay despite not showing much urgency. Sese Bau (7 in 21 balls) tried to steady the ship, but was undone by Shakib Al Hasan (4-9) in the ninth over. They were left foundering on 14/4, and then 29/7.

Kiplin Doriga and Chad Soper revived them from there. The partnership came to an end when Mohammad Saifuddin (2-21) cleaned up Soper (11) in the 15th over. But Doriga kept going, and remained till the end on 46 off 34 balls, with two sixes and two fours. PNG were bowled out for 97 in 19.3 overs. Taskin Ahmed bowled a maiden, and finished with 2-12 in 3.3 overs.

Earlier in the game, Mahmudullah (50 in 28 balls) and Shakib (46 in 39) drove Bangladesh to 181/7 after they opted to bat. Saifuddin (19* in 6) and Afif Hossain (21 in 14) also chipped in with handy contributions at the death to help their side pile up a stiff total.

For PNG, Kabua Morea impressed the most, with 2-26. Damien Ravu and Assad Vala also claimed two wickets each, but went for more than eight and a half an over, while Charles Amini had figures of 2-0-9-0.
