Following their narrow five-run defeat to the Lucknow Super Giants, Mumbai Indians' bowling coach Shane Bond expressed his disappointment with the team's inability to execute their pre-discussed plans. The loss once again highlighted Mumbai's struggles in the death overs, as they conceded an alarming 54 runs in the final three overs, allowing Lucknow to post a formidable total of 177/3.

Bond emphasized the frustration of the coaching staff, stating, "The most frustrating thing is not sticking to the plans that we talk about. We had a clear strategy for players like Marcus (Stoinis) and where we wanted to bowl, but we failed to execute consistently enough."

He further added, "When you have a team plan, you need to force the batsmen to hit in areas where you want them to, making it as difficult as possible for them. You don't want to give them the opportunity to hit where they want to. Unfortunately, we saw that with Stoinis, who is a quality player. We knew he was looking to hit straight down the ground, yet we bowled balls that allowed him to do just that. In the end, his innings proved to be the difference between the two teams."

Despite missing key bowlers such as Jofra Archer and Jasprit Bumrah, Mumbai Indians have relied on less experienced fast bowlers like Jason Behrendorff, Chris Jordan, Arjun Tendulkar, Arshad Khan, and Akash Madhwal. However, Bond refused to use their limited IPL playing experiences as an excuse, stating that in the IPL, regardless of whether it's their first or hundredth game, players are expected to execute the team's plans.

Reflecting on the team's preparation, Bond expressed his disappointment, saying, "We have always taken pride in our preparation, the work we do behind the scenes, and how we analyze the game to identify areas for improvement. The frustrating part is that we continue to make the same mistakes repeatedly. From my perspective, it's disheartening."

Bond concluded by lamenting Mumbai's struggles in the death overs, which have put their playoffs hopes in jeopardy, stating, "You can never fully stop good players from scoring runs, but you'd rather have them score 70 from 47 balls instead of 89 from 47 balls. Those 17 to 20 runs can make a significant difference. We have discussed this issue at the Wankhede Stadium throughout the year. It's a difference of 10-15 runs."

"In this season, we have witnessed batting performances reach new heights. Therefore, as a bowling unit, we need to be brave, able to read batsmen, and be willing to step outside our comfort zones for a longer period. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to do that."

Acknowledging that several bowling attacks have struggled in the tournament, Bond emphasized that it offered little consolation for Mumbai Indians. With their playoff qualification now hanging by a thread and their destiny out of their hands, the team must secure victories in their upcoming matches to keep their hopes alive. The current situation leaves Mumbai's campaign in a precarious state, leaving the coaching staff and fans alike disappointed and concerned about their team's prospects.
