Pakistan vs Australia 2nd Test Day 4: Batters need to step up for Pakistan to salvage a draw Image

A masterclass of reverse swing from Mitchell Starc in the second session has put Australia in a commanding position in the second Test match against Pakistan, in Karachi. After bowling out Pakistan for 148, they closed the day on 81/1, having already stretched the lead to 489.

Starc dismissed Azhar Ali and Fawad Alam with consecutive balls to leave Pakistan reeling at 60/4 in the second session. They never recovered from these setbacks and were wrapped up in just 53 overs. Contrary to popular expectations, Pat Cummins decided against the follow on, presumably to keep the fast bowlers fresh for the fourth innings.

Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne showed urgency in the final session, the latter striking at 97. There is no reason for them to slow down early on Day 4. If Australia manage to extend their lead close to 600, they can declare at lunch, leaving the bowlers with five sessions to bowl out Pakistan.

For Pakistan to salvage a draw from this stage, Iman-ul-Haq and Abdullah Shafique need to build a big partnership. They should not lose more than a couple of wickets on Day 4.

Betway Fantasy Tips

  • Starc was incisive with the old ball. With the reverse swing he was able to generate on Day 3, dealing with him will not be easy for Pakistan batters.
  • From Pakistan, pick Babar Azam and Azhar Ali.
