Half-centuries from Alex Carey and Cam Green stretched Australia's first-innings total to 391 before Pakistan finished Day 2 on 90/1. Imam-ul-Haq got out cheaply, but Abdullah Shafique and Azhar Ali led the recovery with an unbroken 70-run stand. Shafique will resume Day 3 on 45, and Azhar on 30.
Australia were placed well at 341/5 before losing the last five wickets for just 50 runs. Green scored 79 before Naseem Shah bowled him, while Head made 67.
The spinners have not got as much turn from this track as was expected. Mitchell Swepson conceded over three an over. Nathan Lyon, too, failed to threaten the batters consistently. Much depends on the pace duo of Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc if Australia want to wrap up this innings quickly. With reverse swing on offer, Starc will have to do what Naseem Shah did for Pakistan.
Shafique and Azhar, who is playing the first match on his home ground, have looked comfortable during their stay. They would aim to bat out for the first session without being separated.
