Shahid Afridi was recently named as the interim chief selector for the national team, and PCB chairman Najam Sethi has shown his support for him and claimed that the former captain is capable of making "radical judgements."
After Mohammad Wasim was fired by the new PCB management following Pakistan's humbling first-ever 0-3 home series whitewash at the hands of England last month, Afridi was named as the selection committee's interim chair.
He is the kind of person we want on the selection committee because of his popularity and ability to make risky choices, Sethi told Arab News.
"(Someone) to experiment with new talent, to recognise where old is still gold—I think that was lacking in our team, which is why we suffered four straight Test match losses.
"Afridi was on board, wanted certain adjustments, and wanted the team to play daring and thrilling cricket. We will no longer play the game with the intention of winning or losing, but rather with the actual spirit of the game in mind, he continued.
To finalise the Pakistan ODI team against New Zealand, the Afridi-led selection committee met on Sunday with captain Babar Azam and head coach Saqlain Mushtaq.
"Positive strategy, good pitches, and aggressive cricket were all mentioned. We shall all work together to advance cricket in Pakistan. To become a top team, Pakistan must have good pitches, "Afridi stated in a video that the PCB posted.
"We want athletes' hearts to be free of fear. We need to practise here if we want to play good cricket abroad "Added he.
A three-match ODI series between Pakistan and New Zealand will be played. The opening ODI is slated for January 9 at Karachi's National Stadium.
