Punjab Kings part ways with Anil Kumble; approach Eoin Morgan, Trevor Bayliss to take over Image

After a three-year tenure, Punjab Kings of the Indian Premier League (IPL) have decided to part ways with head coach Anil Kumble. It is said that they have reached out to candidates like Eion Morgan, Trevor Bayliss, and a former India coach for the position. 

Prior to the 2020 season, Kumble was chosen to lead the club for the following three seasons. However, a complete board of the owners, including Preity Zinta, businessman Mohit Burman, actors Ness Wadia and Karan Pau

Punjab Kings placed in the bottom half of the IPL points standings in each of the three seasons that Kumble managed the franchise, finishing fifth in 2020 and 2021 when the league had eight teams and sixth in 2022 when it had 10 teams, according to the report. 

According to the story, Kumble was then the fifth coach the Kings had hired in five seasons, following Mike Hesson (2019), Brad Hodge (2018), Virender Sehwag (2017), Sanjay Bangar (2018), and Virender Sehwag (2017). Kumble was the sole Indian head coach in the IPL in 2022.

Kumble was the sole Indian head coach in the IPL in 2020. After his playing career, he worked with three IPL teams, first as a coach for Royal Challengers Bangalore and then for Mumbai Indians. Kings was his third team. This was prior to him taking the position as head coach for India for a year in 2016.

According to the rumour, the franchise is looking for a replacement and will shortly make a statement. 

According to certain social media rumours, Punjab Kings have contacted former England white-ball captain Eoin Morgan, former England and Sri Lanka head coach Trevor Bayliss, and a former India coach to fill the position. 

While Bayliss has extensive experience coaching both at the international and Indian Premier League levels and has twice led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL championship, in 2012 and 2014, Morgan recently retired as England's white-ball captain.

One of the original eight IPL teams, Kings, formerly known as Kings XI Punjab, has only twice reached the play-offs, including a performance in the 2014 championship game. 

Despite assembling a well-rounded group at the 2022 auction, the franchise has suffered from constant switching and replacing of captains and coaches. Liam Livingstone and Jonny Bairstow of England, Kagiso Rabada of South Africa, senior Indian hitter Shikar Dhawan, and bowling all-arounder Odean Smith of the West Indies were among the marquee purchases.
