South Africa's strong performance at Kingsmead sees them lead by 281 runs after Sri Lanka's record low total. Jansen and Bavuma are the standout players.

The ongoing Test match at Kingsmead has showcased South Africa's dominance on the second day, as the team currently holds a commanding position over Sri Lanka. After a whirlwind day that saw 19 wickets tumble and numerous records being shattered, South Africa is in control with a lead extending to 281 runs.

Sri Lanka's batting woes were starkly evident as they were bowled out for an astonishingly low total of 42 runs, marking it as not only their lowest score in Test history but also the lowest ever against South Africa. This pitiful total was also notable for being the second-shortest innings in terms of balls faced, lasting just 83 deliveries. The bowling performance for South Africa was spearheaded by Marco Jansen, whose remarkable figures of 7 wickets for just 13 runs not only highlighted his skill but also underscored the Sri Lankan batsmen's struggles. Jansen achieved this feat in only 41 balls, setting a new record for the fewest deliveries bowled in securing seven wickets in a Test innings.

South Africa entered the day's proceedings with their first innings at 80 runs for the loss of four wickets. However, the situation rapidly worsened, and at one point, they found themselves precariously placed at 117 for 7. In danger of eclipsing their lowest ever score against Sri Lanka of 128, South Africa managed to recover, thanks largely to a resilient partnership spearheaded by Temba Bavuma, who scored 70 runs, combined with pivotal contributions from the lower order. Eventually, South Africa reached 191, which, under the circumstances, seemed sizable.

The Sri Lankan batting lineup crumbled under pressure, with only two players reaching double figures. The top-order batsmen exhibited a detrimental combination of poor judgment and southpaw pace. In a series of dismissals, Kagiso Rabada initiated the downfall by claiming Dimuth Karunaratne's wicket, prompting a series of quick dismissals as Jansen further dismantled Sri Lanka's innings with precise bowling. Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews both fell victim to Jansen's venomous deliveries. Sri Lanka found itself reeling at 16 for 4 by the eighth over.

In the aftermath of the shocking collapse, South Africa opted for a bowling change, bringing in Gerald Coetzee. While Coetzee faced some resistance initially, he too contributed significantly to the Sri Lankan downfall, ultimately taking one wicket before Jansen sealed the innings with two more wickets in a blistering spell that lasted just over an hour. The Sri Lankan innings folded in just 78 minutes, a testament to South Africa's aggressive bowling.

Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka's bowlers had appeared more formidable, with Lahiru Kumara leading the charge. Kumara, along with Asitha and Vishwa Fernando, shared five wickets among them and showed proficiency in extracting seam movement and swing. Their bowling attack thrived on a surface conducive to bounce and development. This impressive effort got them a foothold early in the match.

In stark contrast, South Africa's middle order seemed to be having its struggles on a challenging pitch. The painful moments for Wiaan Mulder stood out, as he faced a barrage of deliveries that eventually led to him suffering a fractured finger, limiting his participation in the match substantially. Though he managed to return for the final partnership in the first innings and appeared in the second innings, his capability to field or bowl has been severely affected.

Kumara, having wrapped up his spell with three wickets for 51 runs in eight overs, created an opening for Asitha and spin bowler Prabath Jayasuriya. The latter contributed significantly to transforming the momentum for Sri Lanka in the initial phases, although it soon fell apart as Jansen’s relentless bowling proved too challenging.

The brilliance of South Africa's batting is personified in Bavuma, whose 70 runs were critical in dragging the team to a total that seemed relatively monumental in hindsight. Though he lost partners at the other end, he managed to unleash a flurry of strokes, including a six off Kumara that showcased his confidence and skill. As the second innings unfolded, Bavuma's steadiness at the crease continued as he moved towards a promising position alongside his partner Tristan Stubbs, who chipped in with valuable contributions.

As South Africa resumes on the third day, the focus will shift onto their efforts to build on their substantial lead while Sri Lanka will be looking to solidify their batting order and mount a formidable response. The pitch conditions are expected to offer a more conducive environment for batting, which may provide Sri Lanka with an opportunity to recover.

With Firdose Moonda covering the event, the unfolding drama at Kingsmead promises to offer cricket enthusiasts an engaging spectacle, rich with tension and determination from both sides. As the match progresses, the attention will be on South Africa's quest for dominance and Sri Lanka's ambition to bounce back from a day they would rather forget.
