South Africa had much the better of Day 2 of the second Test match, in in Gqeberha. Their tail added late runs, following which their bowlers made Bangladesh stumble.
The day began with South Africa 278/5 in their first innings. Kyle Verreynne (10*) and Wiaan Mulder (0*) were at the crease. They added 22 before Khaled Ahmed bowled Verreynne for 22.
But any hopes that Bangladesh might have had of wrapping up the innings early were dashed as Mulder and Keshav Maharaj, who added 80 for the seventh wicket at more than four an over. Maharaj, in particular, not afraid to open his shoulders.
The stand was ended when Taijul Islam bowled Mulder for 33, his fourth wicket of the innings, but South Africa were still able to go to lunch at 384/7.
Maharaj and Simon Harmer added 32 after the resumption, until Maharaj fell for 84 to Taijul. His innings included three sixes and six fours.
Even then, Harmer and Lizaad Williams were able to put on 35 for the ninth wicket, until Harmer was stumped off Taijul for 29. Williams was the last man out next over, leg before to Mehidy Hasan Miraz for 13.
South Africa were all out for 453, with Taijul taking 6-135.
Bangladesh made a poor start, losing Mahmudul Hasan Joy off just the fifth ball without score. Tamim Iqbal (45) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (33) steadied matters with a stand of 79 for the second wicket before both were leg-before in successive overs of Wiaan Mulder. Mulder also had Mominul Haque leg before for six.
Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das put on 22 for the fifth wicket, but Bangladesh could have done without the loss of Das, who was bowled by Duanne Olivier for 11. Mushfiqur eventually went to stumps on 30 and Yasir Ali on eight.
At 139/5, Bangladesh are up against it. They still trail by 314 with five first-innings wickets still standing.
