The Pakistan Cricket Board has banned international spinner Asif Afridi from all cricket for two years after he pleaded guilty to two violations of the PCB's Anti-Corruption Code for Participants.
"Mr. Afridi was given a two-year ban for violating Article 2.4.10, while he was given a six-month ban for violating Article 2.4.4. Both periods of ineligibility will run concurrently and will begin on the date of his provisional suspension, which began on September 12, 2022 "According to a statement issued by the PCB.
The PCB considered the admission of guilt, expression of remorse, past track record, and Asif Afridi's request that the PCB consider his case compassionately, claiming he had unintentionally violated the Code, when determining the sanction period.
"It gives the PCB no joy to suspend an international cricketer for two years," says Najam Sethi, chair of the PCB Management Committee. As the game's governing body, we must set an example, deal with such issues forcefully, and send strong messages to all cricketers.
"It is an unfortunate fact that corruption is a threat to our sport, as selfish corrupters entice cricketers in various ways and methods. That is why the PCB has been investing heavily in player education so that they can remain vigilant and help the PCB eradicate this menace by reporting approaches. If, despite all of our best efforts to raise awareness, a player falls victim to his greed, the PCB has no sympathy."
