On an enthralling final day at the Ageas Bowl, Cricket’s return after an extended break was celebrated with fervour as the the Caribbean reggae filled the air. A game that swung back and forth on the final day firmly tilted in West Indies’ direction after a brilliant Roston Chase – Jermaine Blackwood partnership and the latter’s epochal knock that ended with his team 11 runs away from a win. Here are some stats from the game.

West Indies’ record

This was West Indies’ second win in three years in England while chasing a target of 200 or more in the fourth innings. They had chased down 322 at Leeds in 2017. They are the only away team to chase 200 runs or more in the final innings in England twice in the 21st century.

Blackwood’s liking for England

Jermaine Blackwood has the sixth best batting average for any West Indies batsman against England in Tests (minimum 500 runs). He averages 55 in seven Tests against England with a century and three fifties.

Jason Holder the skipper

Blackwood aside, Holder also loves playing against England. He has won four of his six Tests against England as captain. On the other hand, he has only won seven Tests out of 34 against other teams.

The DRS

22 decisions were reviewed in the game with as many as 9 of them overturned. West Indies successfully turned around 7 decisions against them. England were successful only two times in eight attempts. The umpires had a dreadful game with five of Richard Illingworth’s and four of Richard Kettleborough’s decisions overturned.

Batsmen in run-chases in England

There have only been four scores of fifty or more in successful fourth innings run-chases by an away team in England since 2000. Three of the four are West Indies batsmen – Shai Hope (118*), Jermaine Blackwood (95), Kraigg Brathwaite (95).

Shai Hope’s form

Shai Hope’s form will concern the West Indies. Since his epic century in England in 2017, Hope’s scores in Tests read thus: 3, 44, 1, 14, 24, 2, 7, 6*,16, 9 (latest)

Shannon Gabriel

Gabriel has three Man of the Match awards in Tests since 2017, the joint-most by any West Indian. Five of his nine wickets in the Test match were bowled. He now has 49 victims bowled in Test matches out of a total of 142 wickets. The percentage of bowled dismissals (34.5%) is the seventh best in Test history for anyone with as many wickets as him.
