Indian team started their 69-day Australia tour with a heavy defeat inflicted by the hands of the hosts in the first ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground. In what turned out to be one of the longest ODI games owing to slow over rates from both teams, there were many things to take note of.

Aaron Finch or Steve Smith’s hundred, Glenn Maxwell’s cameo, David Warner’s batting which was later overshadowed on Twitter by his Buttabomma moves, an outing to forget for Indian bowlers, Hardik Pandya and Shikhar Dhawan’s rescue act, dropped catches and much more.

All of which kept Twitterati on its toes. Here are some of the best tweets from the Australia v India first ODI game.

The highlight of the day was possibly the batting from three Australian players who were coming on the back of a forgettable IPL season, Aaron Finch, Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell. All three of them played a big role in taking the hosts to a mammoth total of 374 in 50 overs. So it was expected that the IPL franchises will be in action. On Twitter.

Jimmy Neesham who played a big role on Friday in New Zealand’s win against West Indies shared a tweet that summed up every KXIP fan on the day. But it was Australia’s Glenn Maxwell whose reply on the same was the winner.

Steve Smith who scored the third fastest ODI century for Australia was lauded for his innings and perhaps no other tweet could do justice to the genius.

Jasprit Bumrah hasn’t had a great time playing ODIs this year. In seven 50-overs games that he has played, he has picked up only two wickets. In fact, his wicket of Aaron Finch was his first in five ODI games. Something the ICC was quick to realise and share.

To sum up the difference between the performance difference of players during the IPL and in this international cricket game, perhaps Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer’s recent advert could be a good way to keep things on the table for players and viewers.

 

One of the key reasons for India’s defeat was their fielding. A lot of chances were dropped. A few of them by Australia as well. Indian captain Virat Kohli was dropped by Adam Zampa when he had just one run to his name and former Australia spinner, Brad Hogg did the rest.

David Warner has had a strong connection with the Sunrisers Hyderabad fans. Especially because of his social media game. A true fan of the Telugu film industry. And nothing defines that better than his love for the song, ‘Buttobumma’. This is why, when the crowd asked him to display his moves, while he was fielding at the boundary, he didn’t hesitate. A moment that melted the Twitterverse.

 

Though India didn’t have much to take away from the first ODI, Hardik Pandya’s innings was one to cherish for Indian fans. And even Delhi Capitals, who lost the IPL 2020 Final to Mumbai Indians didn’t shy in paying respects to the MI boy and Indian all-rounder.

This was India’s sixth consecutive defeat. They lost the ODI series (3-0) and Test Series (2-0) in New Zealand early this year, and the fans just had to remind themselves that this was something to look seriously at.

 

Last, but not the least, former England captain Michael Vaughan who is known for speaking his heart out and making bold predictions took to Twitter to make a very early call on the big summer in Australia. Something which the Indian fans surely won’t like.
