The International Cricket Council (ICC) has chosen Uganda to host the final round of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup qualifiers for the African region. The Chief Executive Officer of the Uganda Cricket Association (UCA), Alan Mugume, confirmed the news, stating that the event will take place at the Lugogo Cricket Oval in Kampala from December 7 to 18.
Eight teams, including the hosts Uganda, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Rwanda, Nigeria, Namibia, and two additional teams to be determined from the Division Two qualifiers in Botswana in October, will participate in the qualifiers.
The ICC has announced that the top two teams from the qualifiers in Kampala will secure a spot in the global qualifiers, representing Africa in the Women's T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to be held in Bangladesh.
Expressing gratitude to the ICC, Joshua Mwanja, the UCA Operations Manager, emphasized the association's excitement to host the T20 Women's qualifiers. He acknowledged the confidence the ICC has shown in Uganda's ability to organize an event of this scale. Mwanja also highlighted the immediate preparations required to ensure the grounds are ready and to secure local partners for support.
Uganda previously participated in the T20 Women's global qualifiers in 2018, following their victory in the African regional qualifiers held in Namibia in 2017.
