Virat Kohli has decided to step from the T20I captaincy after the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, slated to begin next month in Oman and UAE. Kohli, however, will continue to lead the side in the ODI and Test.

He cited the 'immense workload' of captaining the side in all three formats as a major reason for arriving at this decision. There were speculations regarding Kohli's resignation from the last few days.

Kohli has never captained India in the ICC T20 World Cup. He succeeded MS Dhoni in 2017. This will be his first and last T20 World Cup as a skipper.

Kohli said that his decision to relinquish the captaincy came after a long discussion with Ravi Shastri and Rohit Sharma.

'After a lot of contemplation and discussions with my close people, Ravi bhai and also Rohit, who have been an essential part of the leadership group, I've decided to step down as the T20 Captain after this T20 World Cup in Dubai in October,' said Kohli.

Although there's no official confirmation yet, Rohit is likely to be the next T20I captain. Rohit boasts a great record in franchise-level cricket, having led Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles.
