Quinton de Kock fell four short of scoring his second consecutive century before disciplined bowling from South Africa wrapped up West Indies for just 149 on Day 2 in the second Test match, at St Lucia.

Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Keshav Maharaj ran through the top order before Wiaan Mulder wrapped up things with three quick blows to wipe off the tail.

Kagiso Rabada struck on the first ball of the innings: a length ball straying down leg took a faint edge off Kraigg Brathwaite’s bat. Brathwaite has been unable to put up a significant innings ever since taking over as captain. His fellow opener Kieran Powell fell two overs later.

While Shai Hope did well to hold the innings from one end, wickets kept falling from the other. Roston Chase was undone by Anrich Nortje on 4, while Kyle Mayers could only add 12 before falling to Keshav Maharaj.

Mayers’ dismissal reduced the hosts to 54/4. Jermaine Blackwood then joined Hope, and the pair played over 15 overs before Hope was beaten through the gate by Lungi Ngidi. Hope made 43 off 104 balls.

Blackwood, meanwhile, made 49 to propel West Indies to a face-saving total. His dismissal brought an end to West Indies’ innings as Wiaan Mulder struck thrice in quick succession to finish with figures of 4-3-1-3.

Earlier in the day, South Africa added 70 to their overnight tally to reach 298. De Kock was unlucky to miss out on a century by four runs. He was dismissed by Mayers.

South Africa 298 (de Kock 96; Mayers 3-28) lead West Indies 149 (Blackwood 49; Mulder 3-1) by 149 runs.
