Rassie van der Dussen (75*) notched up his sixth Test fifty to help South Africa set West Indies a target of 324 in the second and final Test, in St Lucia. The hosts closed Day 3 on 15 for no loss. They need 309 more runs to level the series.

Day 3 got underway two hours 40 minutes late due to persistent rain. Starting their second innings with a 149-run lead, South Africa were left reeling at 54/6, then 73/7, after Kemar Roach (4-52) and Kyle Mayers (3-22) tore South Africa batters apart.

Aiden Markram (4), Dean Elgar (10), Keegan Petersen (18), Kyle Verreynne (6) and Quinton de Kock (0) all returned to the pavilion cheaply. Van der Dussen and Kagiso Rabada (40) then shared a 70-run stand for the eighth wicket to take South Africa to a respectable position before the latter fell to Roach.

Joshua Da Silva’s stumping of Lungi Ngidi off Kraigg Brathwaite, his first in Test cricket, brought the South African innings to a close, on 174. Jayden Seales (1-34) and Jason Holder (1-24) claimed a wicket each.

Brathwaite (5*) and Kieran Powell (9*) left unharmed before the close of play. West Indies have chased down totals in excess of 300 seven times including twice in the last four years. However, they are yet to cross 200 in the series.
