Kane Williamson, the New Zealand ODI captain, will have surgery on his injured right knee after scans revealed he had ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament while playing for the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Williamson is now unlikely to be fit and available for selection at this year's ICC ODI Cricket World Cup in India, based on standard rehabilitation timelines.

After learning the news, Williamson wanted to thank everyone who had helped him since his injury.

"I've received a lot of encouragement over the last few days, and I'd like to thank both the Gujarat Titans and New Zealand Cricket for it. It's understandably disappointing to sustain such an injury, but my focus now is on undergoing surgery and beginning rehabilitation "NZC quoted him as saying.

"It'll take some time, but I'll do everything in my power to get back on the pitch as soon as possible."

While the World Cup now appears unlikely, Williamson has pledged to help the team in any way he can.

"I'm looking forward to doing everything I can to help Gary and the team over the next few months."

Williamson will most likely have knee surgery within the next three weeks.
