In a significant decision, the International Cricket Council has decided to postpone the 2021 Women’s World Cup that was originally scheduled to be held in New Zealand from February 6. The decision was taken in view of the coronavirus pandemic that has put on hold cricket matches all over the world.
The Women’s World Cup became the second global event that was postponed by the ICC due to the disruption of the Covid-19 outbreak. Earlier, the T20 World Cup (men’s), which was to be held in Australia in October, had been shifted to 2022
The ICC also decided to award India with the hosting rights for the 2021 Men’s T20 World Cup, while Australia will host the event a year later.
The 2021 T20 World Cup will be held in October-November next year, with the finals being scheduled on November 14. Australia will host the finals in 2022 on November 13.
Though the ICC has created new windows for all ICC events, the greatest challenge is for the players, who had been mentally preparing for the global tournaments. Players like MS Dhoni would have wanted a final shot at playing in an ICC event to end his career, but with the coronavirus wreaking havoc, Dhoni, among others, will have to ponder over their future ahead.
