Alex Ross' half-century went in vain as Melbourne Stars beat Sydney Thunder by six wickets. They chased down 152 with 17 balls to spare, thanks to an unbroken 72-run stand between Andre Russell and Hilton Cartwright.
The Thunder lost three wickets for just 40, and were left reeling at 65/4 by the end of the 12th over. Alex Ross and Daniel Sams then added 84 to bring them back into the game. Sams got out for 22, while Ross remained unbeaten on 77. For the Stars, Brody Couch and Ahmad picked up two wickets apiece.
Asked to chase 152, the Stars ended up losing early wickets in Joe Clarke and Nick Larkin. Glenn Maxwell scored 40 in 25 balls before he fell to Tanveer Sangha. Russell then struck five sixes in his 22-ball 43 and Cartwright made 22 in 12 balls as the Stars completed the chase in 17.1 overs.
